Stay safe out there. The height difference is negligible, so that’s not a problem. After that, it was time for greeblies, covering up holes, creating new holes, and weathering the Taurox bits so they don’t look too pretty. That worked pretty well, although I did leave run of the floor/ceiling about 1mm too high. ), so they got wrapped up on 12/27 as well. All that puzzling-things-out resulted in a major update to my 40k terrain page, which now links to finished scenery and lists all of my pieces in ways that should be helpful when deciding how to lay them out for play. Small flying base CR: Drones (all types)
Up next is probably one of the two Deff Dreads in my current list; I’ve got a three-armed big dude on my desk, mostly still on the sprue. Grab a shaker of salt for this bit, because holding pieces in place to measure things isn’t the most exact science, and I’m not building a stock Trukk and Taurox just to have them on hand for easy measurements. 40mm Round (~1.5") - What I think of as a Terminator base. I like Facepeela’s static, menacing pose, but I don’t want two of it; my second Deff Dread will probably be posed raising one leg, about to gleefully stomp on something. I used the same two Trukk bed pieces she did to seal the open back of the cab (I have no interest in painting the interior), and snipped what I suspect is the same chunk out of the top one so I could “slot” the Taurox roof right into it. Prior to February, I was a guy who sometimes painted miniatures and generally didn’t especially enjoy it. Down the road, when I paint my Morkanaut, I’ll get to experience a massive completion bump (+340 points, if memory serves). This was a really fun conversion, and a good choice for my first. As always, my goal is to do nothing that could be considered modeling for advantage. HO - Huge Oval, If you want to correct an error, or want to put in the size of the new offical bike/cav please do so! 2021 Martin Ralya. I can’t wait to see how this approach looks across a larger force. I tried Blu-Tack, and that was fine, but I didn’t like the idea of leaving a blob of it on there forever. Solid Bases
My hope is that sticking to a single recipe for war paint, which every model in Moonkrumpa’s Megalootas wears, will unify the larger army. So I chopped away at the small arm and made a flat spot that held a magnet at the right angle, and on my third try I got it right. Uncharted waters! 127mm R: Hierodule (imprecise, as the sculpted base isn't perfectly round, but it's very close to 5")
Whether you are a new player with random eBay models, an older RT era player getting back into the game and wondering why everyone else's terminators look "different" or a scratch builder who doesn't want to buy a metal killa-kan to know how big to make your scratch builds, sooner or later you want to know for certain how big the base is. Bike Base LR: Rough Riders, that one prone Catachan sniper
Next I added the bed sides, armor, and roll bars per the Trukk instructions. 60mm R: Killa Kans [2010 release]
I left the engine housing off because I’m doing it differently than she did; that step comes later. 40mm R: Mega Nobs
Want to see a big list of every tag I’ve used on Yore? Last week, I read a comment somewhere (Reddit, I think) to the effect that you should be able to easily spot your Warlord/Warboss because they’re the largest infantry model in your army. The Mega-Dread is a hulking, armor plated monster, much larger and considerably more powerful than the more commonly encountered Deff Dreads and Killa Kans. I set it down to make sure all six wheels touched the level countertop, and that the Trukk itself was reasonably level (it’s not perfect). Use this Stratagem in the Fight phase , when a DEFF DREADS unit from your army is chosen to fight with. Blithely assuming that green stuff was just easily-moldable putty that would dry into something about as hard as plastic, I decided to go that route instead. — and the mix of skin tones works as well in practice as it did in my head. For now, the wheels are just friction-fit; I’ll glue them on later so I can position them correctly — because, unsurprisingly, with all the shit they have bolted onto them they’re not uniformly round. Now the deff dread is about midway in size between a killa kan and a mega-dread. I am still working on exact formatting, but if you know the base sizes of an army, please update this as you can! Large Oval: Night Scythe/Doom Scythe
Magnetizing 1/4 of the possible slots felt like a waste of time, though; I wanted to be able to switch freely from 3 melee/1 ranged to 2 melee/2 ranged. Just imagine a photo of my weathering steps here, because I forgot to take one. 60mm R: Malanthrope
My Yore blog has been running since August 28, 2012, with 428 posts. I also built my first Deff Dread over the weekend. First, I shimmed the spot where the engine will sit to make it the right height. Small Flying Base CR: Gargoyles
I have thus decided that this is exactly the kind of nail that needs beaten to death with the hammer of wiki! Or not! But there’s ample reason to hope for a better year, and hope for it I do! I did a ton of noodling, test-fitting, measuring, and fiddling before putting glue to plastic. Due to their complexity, Mega-Dread pilots have a whole array of sophisticated (for Orks) implants rammed up their heads in order to use the unique hybrid system that allows them to manoeuvre these oversized tin cans. How useful are the big clankers? What size bases do my metal terminators go on? Bear in mind they fit better on the 50mm. (Later on, I’ll cover the gaping holes with Ork scrap.). Being larger and more sophisticated then standard Ork walkers, most Mega Dreads a… It’s about 1/2″ taller than the stock Trukk, but it’s the same width and length. I replaced it with a Princeton Velvetouch size 0 Round, an excellent synthetic brush with similar characteristics. This time, I’m calling him done! It’s more, well, natural than the lightbox, but I don’t think I have this technique quite figured out yet. After that, though, I messed up just about everything it was possible to mess up. Then I roughed up the grill from the Taurox and stuck it to the engine, alone with the Trukk bumper (attached exactly as the kit intends, since I left the front of the Trukk chassis intact in part one). I want an Ork instead of a turret, so my Trukk will be about 1/2″-3/4″ higher — in the cab area only — than a stock Trukk. (I’m last in line for the vaccine, as I should be, and my family’s bubble, distancing, mask usage, and other precautions don’t seem likely to change for months.) Custom text is not available on this product. Whoever you are, reading this right now, I hope things improve for you and yours. No base: No bases for Big Gunz however, Grots are still on 25mm R
I also experimented with using mostly natural light (no lightbox) and just a piece of printer paper as a backdrop. This particular pairing doesn’t make a lot of sense (there’s a door to nowhere on the second floor…), but I’ve got some other Manufactorum pieces that would look right at home up there. So instead I chopped them to roughly match the height of the bed sides. I overcooked the weathering on a few bits on these guys, notably the checked shoulder pads. 32mm R: Chaos Space Marines, Cult Marines, Havocs (old), Chosen, Possessed, IC's without bikes or terminator armour. 100mm R: Sporocyst, Tyrannocyte
I’m pretty happy with them overall — I just need to remember to go easy on the grit and grime! Large Oval: Riptide, Razor Shark, and Sun Shark
I went to work grabbing some bitz and bubs to both support the main leg section, as well as cover up the gaps in the various sections of the base. Color-wise, apart from that, it’s just a bigger Killa Kan. Deff Dreads are clanking, rattling, lumbering, smoke belching, implacable engines of destruction. 60mm R: all dread models except dreadknight, inquisitor karamazov
After waffling about it, I decided to take the plunge and magnetize the Dread’s lower arms. (The Grots have their own post, just to keep things organized.). It can take a Kustom Force Field, allow your Big Mek to take Shokk Attack Gun and still able to provide protection for … I'm assembling and painting it for miniwargaming.com.I'm also magnetizing it so that I can do a couple different configerations. I’ve dabbled in kitbashing but never done any proper conversion before, so this project was a bit daunting — but also quite exciting. [EDITs by Darkelf - Well done on the original article! So I settled on combing the chassis from both vehicles. Bludteef and the Deff Dread both go front and centre, ready to cause trouble in the centre. However the newer purestrain genestealer models provided in the Deathwatch: Overkill board game came on 32mm bases. Anyhoo: rad kit, magnetization is a struggle but also a skill I can work on, and I can’t wait to build the next big stompy thing! Well this is my second model being Re-Uploaded. 40mm R: All models in Terminator armor
LO - Large Oval
Before I get into stats and silly stuff I kept track of, though, I want to pause to write about the pandemic. I just removed the balloon (spoiler alert: it will become a Deff Dread in the very near future), and added a platform with plasticard at the back of the ship. The silhouette is roughly the same, although the cab is certainly more solid. 60x35mm O: Jackal Alphus, Atalan Jackals
I wound up working on a box of Gretchin at the same time as five Boyz (not my usual approach; it’s too many at once! -Added a new map size "Arena" 20x20 -Changed default map sizes(30x30,36x36,42x42,48x48,60x60) ALL FACTIONS -Removed the trait "Hero" from Starting Heroes. Small Flying base CR: Screamers of Tzeentch
It took me a surprisingly long time to actually glue two things together and start this project, because one significant screw-up could mean wasting two costly model kits on a failed project. I’ve diverged a bit from her build, and I’m diverging from it more in this second post. Completed Deff Dread for Dreadtober 2017 - Despite this being one of the busiest months I’ve had in a long while, I have managed to finish the Deff Dread for Dreadtober 2017. The lighter blue I used for Mukkit’s Klaw — as part of my unifying theme of every model in this army having one blue hand — doesn’t look as different from the other blue parts as I’d hoped, but it is a bit clearer in person. 60mm R: IC's on Juggernaut of Khorne, or Palanquin of Nurgle, Helbrutes, Daemon Princes, Nurgle Daemon Prince or any model with Monstrous Creature rule
Then I added shims of scrap plastic (center supports from the Trukk chassis) where the rear portion of the Trukk chassis was going to go. All of that I chalk up to teething. Next up is the front end, which I’ll be building around the big-block Trukk engine. 25mm R: Flayed Ones, Lychguard / Triarch Praetorians, Immortals / Deathmarks,
We shall see! 40mm R: St. Celestine (Comes with 25mm and 40mm)
25mm R: Gretchin
This size has become my workhorse, handling everything from edge highlights to base-coating details to eyes. I like the idea of my Orks being like, “Oi, let’s put dis bit back, hurr hurr,” and then sticking the grill back on because it’s funny. 25mm or 32 mm R: Storm Boyz (Including Nob)
I used the Taurox exhaust pipes on both sides; on the left side, they’re intact. Cavalry Base LR: Flesh Hounds of Khorne, Seekers of Slaanesh,
Later on in the process, I realized that I could have glued a stack of 2-3 magnets together, carefully inserted them into the body hole, and possibly gotten some extra oomph out of them. Does a daemon prince get a 40mm or 60mm base? 40mm R: Mieotic Spore
Turns out, green stuff is incredibly sticky, not terribly easy to work with, and dries semi-soft.
